A empresa de refrigerantes do Porto Sobreiro poderia ter sido um dos grandes nomes de refrigerantes do país. Mas como esta, existem muitas mais histórias que poderiam ter sido memoráveis. O nome e a história desta fábrica contínua, ainda hoje, a marcar uma família. E ficou para sempre escrita na história de uma freguesia, a de Cadima.
Antes do 25 de Abril, da coca-cola, e dos grandes nomes do mercado dos refrigerantes havia uma pequena empresa que tentava singrar neste mercado tão competitivo. A família Gil chega pela primeira vez a Cantanhede com a ambição de comercializar Madeira. Assim que se depararam com a qualidade da água da fonte do Porto Sobreiro, e com o sabor das laranjas que nasciam na zona, começaram a surgir novas ideias e ambições.
A fábrica de Porto Sobreiro passou por duas gerações da Família Gil. A primeira geração terá sido composta por Francisco Gil, José Gil e Duarte, um cunhado dos irmãos. Daí a designação da empresa Duarte, Gil & Irmãos. Nome que se manteve com a segunda geração.
A segunda geração da família viu o negócio a prosperar. A empresa começava a alargar a sua rede de distribuição, e via as vendas a crescer de ano para ano.
A primeira geração terá conseguido vender 3500 grades no primeiro ano. Em 1979, já com nova gerência, a fábrica já contava com 190000 vendas anuais. (Cada grade continha 24 garrafas).
É com a última gerência que as coisas começam a correr mal. A fábrica tinha saído da família Gil, para pertencer a alguém que ambicionava com o sucesso a todo custo. A falta de comunicação entre os novos proprietários levam a desentendimentos. O enorme desejo de ver as receitas a aumentar levam os novos proprietários a cometerem uma série de ilegalidades. E aquilo pelo qual a família Gil teria lutado tanto, termina.
As dívidas já não eram preocupação da família Gil. No entanto, permanece até hoje uma mágoa nos familiares que vivenciaram os anos de glória. Foram obrigados a acordar de um sonho, quase perfeito.
Hoje tudo o que resta são apenas destroços, fotografias e velharias, e armazéns penhorados ao banco.
The soft drink company of Porto Sobreiro could have been one of the country's greatest soft drink. But like this, there are many more stories that could have been memorable. The name and history of this factory continues, even today, to mark a family. And it was forever written in the history of a village, the village of Cadima.
Before April 25th (independence day of Portugal), before Coca-Cola, and the other big names in the soft drink market, there was a small company trying to move into this very competitive market. The Gil family arrives for the first time at Cantanhede with the ambition to market wood. As soon as they came across the water quality of Porto Sobreiro's fountain, and with the taste of the oranges that were born in the area. New ideas and ambitions began to emerge.
The Porto Sobreiro factory passed through two generations of the Gil Family. The first generation will have been composed by Francisco Gil, José Gil and Duarte, a brother-in-law of the brothers. Hence the designation of Duarte, Gil & Irmãos. Name that stayed with the second generation.
The second generation of the family saw the business thrive. The company began to expand its distribution network, and saw sales grow from year to year.
The first generation will have managed to sell 3500 grades in the first year. In 1979, already with new management, the factory already had 190000 annual sales. (Each grid contained 24 bottles).
It is with the last management that things start to go wrong. The factory had left the Gil family, to belong to someone who coveted with success at all costs. Lack of communication between new owners lead to misunderstandings. The overwhelming desire to see the incomes rise led the new owners to commit a series of illegalities. And what the Gil family would have fought so hard for, ends.
Debts were no longer of concern to the Gil family. However, it still remains a pain in the family who experienced the glory years. They were forced to wake up from a dream, almost perfect.
Today all that is left is nothing but wreckage, photographs, junk, and warehouses tied to the bank.
