Lavadeiras - is the name given to the Afurada's ladies that wash their clothes by hand
Numa quarta-feira de Outubro, com imenso nevoeiro, em que nem era possível ver a outra margem do rio, passei pela Afurada. À medida que me aproximava da zona dos tanques públicos, achava que o nevoeiro seria sinal de descanso para as famosas lavadeiras. No entanto acabei por conhecer 3 simpáticas senhoras. E afuguentei outras quantas, com a minha humilde máquina fotográfica. Partilhamos histórias e medos, que surgiram com o crescimento do turismo. Apesar de não ter ido com muito tempo, consegui aproveitar e ter uma conversa bastante interessante com estas senhoras, que passam o dia a vender peixe, lavar roupa, e cuidar da casa.
On a October's Wednesday, with so many fog that it wasn't possible to see the other side of the river, I went to Afurada. As soon as I was near the public washing tanks, I started to think that there would be no one washing in there. Because of the fog, all the famous Afurada's ladies would be at home. However iIve meet 3 really nice ladies, and scared a bunch of them with my camera. We shared histories and fears, that appeared with the tourism growth. I didn't went with much time, but I was able to enjoy a really good talk with these ladies, who spent their day selling fish, washing their clothes.
Afurada in Porto is well known for it's public washing tanks. And the locals still uses them daily. Afurada it's a particular place in Porto that has been growing a lot lately, because of turism. And has been affecting the locals, because they need to adapt to changes.

Mrs Isaurina lived in an Afurada that she doesn't recognizes no more. She doesn't have the opportunity to enjoy the new places made for the turists. The public washing tank is the only place where she goes. To enjoy and walk around is meant for the young people.

Marks of a long life lived. Mrs Isaurina, although of having a washing machine back at home, she prefers to wash her cloths by hand. As long as she haves the energy and strength, she won't let a machine take her pleasure.
O tanque público é também um ponto de encontro. Onde se mete as conversas em dia, se conta algumas fofocas, e se troca algumas ideias do último episodio da novela | The public washing tank is also a meeting point. Where it is possible to catch up some news, and changing some ideas.
A Maria de Fátima gosta muito de como a Afurada está a ficar, cheia de vida e animação. No entanto começa a temer pela segurança dos seus netos. As crianças já não podem brincar como antigamente. Agora, a presença de um adulto é sempre necessária. A Afurada já não é só frequentada pelos locais | Maria de Fátima likes a lot the way Afurada is changing. However she's starting to fear for the safety for her grandkids. The kids can't play outside like the old times. There's to many people over there now.
